To the examiner

I've now completed the research, plannining, producing of the magazine and the final evaluation tasks.

FINAL PRODUCT.

Evaluation Question 5

5. How did you attract/address your audience?
The audience age range I have is between older teenagers and young adults, this is mainly more of the student age so I have produced my magazine in a way that will attract them to buy it. I wanted to attract mainly girls as I feel that there isn't a magazine out there for them where boys have 'NME'. I did this by featuring a girl of a similar age to my audience on the cover who would be considered as someone who would appeal to the female audience. This could be due the way she is positioned, the clothing that she is wearing and the hair style used. As for the colours I tried to stick to black, white and soft colours as this is quite feminine, I think they would be aesthetically pleasing to a female because they coordinate with the colours in the photo. The cover lines feature female artists than the average 'NME' magazine cover, which I did to appeal to a female audience. I have chosen British artists to feature on my cover. I did this so it would attract the audience as they could feel as if they have more of a chance to see them perform live since they are located in Britain. I think the banner featuring the free Lana Del Rey poster would address the audience as it targets a certain age group which is the young adults/teenagers and since it's a young audience possibly university students, which therefore this would appeal to them as it's free and are wanting anything free at their age.

The contents are designed for my audience because they would follow the mainly formal language I have used throughout my pages. I feel that my pictures would be attractive to them as they are all of young and successful who they would aspire to be like as well as being able to relate to because of the age. The fact many of my features gives readers a better insight into bands is also a feature that I feel would attract my audience. For example, the interviews gives the audience the chance to feel closer to their favourite artists/bands. I think by giving the different pages subheadings such as the reviews section would appeal to the audience because it helps them go straight away to the parts of the magazine they are interested in.

The language I have used in the interview would appeal because of the interview style; the voice of a young artist featured would effectively relate to my audience. I also think the photograph on the double page spread would appeal to my audience, the styling and pose of it I found to be very popular among my friends who would fit into my audience. The cover line that reads 'I'm back and don't give a f*ck what people think' would appeal to my audience as I feel they could relate to this as they might like to think that just as this artist has problems that any other young teenager/adult has strong opinions and problems in life, with which they have an invested interest. This would make the artist more appealing to the reader because they feel they have something in common. The interview represents the artist in a very positive manner and explaining her return in to the music industry. I think the fact that the interview focuses mainly on music as oppose to other features such as fashion would attract my audience as they would be more interested to know the story behind the artist’s music than what they are planning on wearing to a festival for example.

On a whole, I think I've done quite a few things to attract my audience and address them in an appropriate and successful manner. I think I achieved this by focusing on my audience profile and the requirements of what my audience would want. The content is focused on what I know people who would buy the magazine like, as my friends and older siblings of this age group would be this audience.

Evaluation Question 3

3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
A media institution is a non-profit organisation which regulates and distributes advertising, entertainment and information services. In the UK there are many institutions such as Future PLC, Bauer and IPC Media.  The publisher that i would use to publish my magazine would be IPC Media. This is because they are one of the leading media institutions in the UK, and also that ‘NME’ magazine uses them as their publisher which has a target audience that would also read mine. IPC Media is a well-known publisher and has approximately 26million young adults in the UK that read a magazine published by IPC Media therefore using them to publish my magazine I am confident that they will do a good job of it. As well as this since they are such a big institution there should be more advertisement options as it should be both easier and cheaper to advertise with help from such a big media institution. The distribution method that I’d want to be is firstly the most common way of putting in to popular stores such as WHSmith, newsagents, as most people still if they want a magazine go to the shops. Big chain supermarkets such as Sainsbury’s and Tesco are becoming the main sellers of magazines nowadays therefore I would make sure that I distributed some to the supermarkets to get most people able to see my magazine and buy it. Finally I would also distribute my magazine up online and use the internet as distribution this is because many other magazines nowadays are putting them up online so if I was to do this with mine I'd be keeping up in the competition. Also it'd attract younger teenagers are they are spending more time online than actually going into any shops and rather do online shopping.

Evaluation Question 7

7. Looking back at your preliminary task (the continuity editing task), what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full product?
Having made my school magazine edit first I feel that I have developed my skills both in photoshop and getting/developing ideas and have shown improvements. When I first started my school magazine I wasnt very skilled at using photoshop an example of this would be that I had no idea how to make layers and cut out images. I decided on my preliminary to use very simple and basic layouts and techniques. I also didnt plan it accurately and feel that I didnt push my technical abilities to the extent that now I realise I can do.
When doing the school magazine we didn't have the oppurtunity to research and plan which therefore I have now learnt that from my music magazine that research and planning is benefitial to the outcome and helps to develop and challenge different ideas. From the analysis of other magazine covers that I have done has taught me how magazines are designed to attract and please their target audience. Creating my music magazine allowed me to apply the knowledge I was learning in an effective way, when comparing my school magazine to my music magazazine I think it represents how I have learnt different aspects that are included in magazines. An example of this would be on the cover of my school magazine the barcode would have needed to be smaller, this issue number and date smaller. Another example of what I have learnt and improved on is the contents I have included more detail this time, more variation and a less confusing layout. Also my photographs throughout are edited to compliment the magazine and not over edited so it looks over the top and to 'done up'.

Evaluation Question 4

4. Who would be the audience for your media product?
I think that my audience would mainly be students aged 15 - 25 and the majority gender of being females, I chose this audience as I believe that there is a gap in the market for this. 'NME' has mainly male readership and I took this information and thought to design more of a girls type instead to create something new for girls the same age group as boys reading NME.The personality I'd assume my audience to have is, relaxed, carefree and independent.  Since my magazine content is basically the same as NME the sort of taste that my audience would have when shopping is Zara, Urban Outfitters, little vintage stores and even charity shops where little quirky fashionable clothing can be found. My audience would listen to indie rock and indie alternative music meaning artists such as Lana Del Rey, Eliza Doolittle, Crystal castles, the vaccines and many more all that feature within my magazine.   Favourite TV programs that the audience I think would watch is a variety such as Friends, The mighty boosh, NME music channel, BRIT awards, The Grammys, Noel Fielding’s luxury comedy, skins, family guy, The inbetweeners and more. My audience would have a chilled back lifestyle and would enjoy hobbies such as photography, art, music festivals/gigs, member of a band, collecting vintage items and social networking.

Evauation Question 2

2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?
My magazine represents social groups such as teenagers and running into early 20's that are into music which is slightly different from typical chart hit music. The social group I would put my magazine forth for would be indie scensters. The magazine is to raise awareness of the more unknown bands that are coming out, my magazine will always be revealing new artists that have more of a ‘quirky’ and individual feel with their music. I think a main part of the magazine that represents this social group is my model on my front cover and double page spread; she represents this social group well as she herself is my 19 year old sister so her age is right in the middle of my age choice. What she is wearing is a very retro looking top that has a navy blue with white polka dots 'peter pan' styled collar. The black jacket over the top was to make it just look like more of a casual capturing shot, I used this outfit to stand out a 'quirky' fashion reflecting what type of magazine it was. I also used 4 dried up pink roses in her hair when taking my final photos' as this was in fashion summer 2011 particularly at music festivals a lot of teenage girls wore these around the festival campus'. Therefore I thought this would be a good opportunity to add in a little bit of girliness rather than her hair just in a plain bun with nothing standing out. As for the double page spread I had my model dress in a plain dark grey jumper, plum red trousers and little winter ankle boots with a single feather necklace falling around her neck. The clothing I tried to keep very basic however I thought that the necklace added to her style of being quirky which relates back to my social group of teenagers. The wallpaper behind her is in a derelict house that is currently being done up, I thought that this background was very good as it shoes an old fashioned worn look that is very dainty and got a quirky twist to it representing her age group and what they are like. This image of Florence I like to think is similar to mine, the similarities that I thought they both had was that they are both look around the same age and pulling the same face. I used this facial expression as I think it may grab peoples' attention to think what is wrong with her and pick up the magazine to read into why she might possibly be looking like that.  My representation is a positive one and could be aspirational for the audience as Abby LeMay is pretty, well dressed and friendly. As this is positive it leads to it being aspirational and people wanting to be more like Abby as she has these qualities. The images below show a similar artist to what mine is like as they both product the same type of music and have the same quirky style.

MY PITCH.

I think that my pitch went alright however I could have improved my answers to some of the questions that were asked as I felt quite put on the spot and wasn't really sure how to answer and get across the points I was trying to make. On both my blog and in my pitch as my genre and theme is quite vague and is a bit of a mix of different ideas I felt it hard to deliver and show exactly what I am trying to go for. I could have improved my animoto with abit more clearer images on what my magazine genre is. As for the actual animoto itself I think was interesting for the class as it was colourful a wide variety of different images of bands, artists, models and tumblr images.

'STYLE MODEL' TYPE OF MAGAZINE.

My magazine is going to be an indie magazine that covers a large amount of artists particually for girls as I believe there is a gap in the market for this. My magazine aim is to advertise the more smaller small bands/artists which are making their way through the music industry whilst including exclusive interviews and funny articles which will make my target audience more interested and happy with the magazine.

INSTITUTION.

For 'Q' and Kerrang magazine Bauer Media Group publish these, and i think that since especailly they publish 'Q' which this magazine covers a wide variety of music genres such as pop, rock, indie, R'n'B and many more, so this could be a good publisher to use as they know the market. My magazine genre is based on 'indie girls' i think this publisher would be good to use as they cover indie genre along with many other different genres.

DRAFT ARTICLE.

Draft Article                                                                           Liv Wood

Q:  So Abby, your back but this time are you back for good?
A: Well the thing is, I feel that I just needed a break from my music, as soon as I came out of uni I was straight into that recording studio and I was so keen to start up my music career that I forgot about my real life but this time since having that break I feel refreshed and raring to get back on top of the music again. I understand that people were slightly disappointed I just left but now I’m back and don’t give a f**k what people think Ha-ha
Q: Would you say that you have become more serious since coming back?
A: I think in some ways I have like when it actually comes to making the music, I can go off task and tend to mess around as I don’t like to be too serious as I want to enjoy making my music. I think it was because I was younger and now after having this break has made me more mature.  I suppose at the end of the day it’s my career and my mistake if I mess things up.

Q: There has been a lot of confusion and debates between why you chose the name of your new album to be called ‘Power on me’ and songs that relate with more ‘electro’ side of music, if so can you tell us why you’ve chosen to do this?
A: I find it really difficult to think of what to call my songs as I don’t like using names to do with my feelings. I prefer them to be very different and mesh words together so it’s almost like I’m creating my own new words sometimes I make myself laugh with the things I can think of!
Q: Is it correct when I say that you apparently recorded some of your album tracks in your apartment down in London?
A: Yes I did, in my early mornings whilst drinking my 5 cups of coffee I’d always sing to myself wondering what i could have next line by line and ended up producing two of the songs that are on my album now. Once I’d finished writing them I just wanted them recorded straight away so it was done and out the way.
Q: Do you reckon after this album is released you will start to make another or wait?
A: Well I think I’m going to wait and see how well this one does first before I make any decisions, If I get a really good response whilst on tour I’m sure I’ll be inspired by things around me to write more songs, but yeah I’d love to keep going just waiting for a response now!
Q: You can play the piano? In any of your songs do you record not only your voice but piano playing as well?
A: No, When I was younger I was inspired by my dad to play the piano as I used to listen to him and I thought he was amazing which made me want to learn how to play and ever since then when I see my dad we play together and I want to try and keep that something personal that me and my dad do and not include in my career.

Q: How does it feel knowing that you have popular DJ’s such as Zane Lowe and Annie Mac backing you and your new album release?
A: It feels amazing, I can’t believe it still. I didn’t think that they would’ve even heard of me turns out I was fully wrong. But yeah it’s a good feeling that I have support from people who can get me more noticed by playing my songs.
Q:  Rumors get around that you and Lana Del Rey are ‘BMA’s?
A: Wow!! people calling her Lana Del Rey confuses me sometimes Ha-ha her real name is Lizzie but yeah she is so much fun to be around and when I first met her I was surprised at how she was, as some of her songs come across to me as quite serious and emotional however in real life she is such a good laugh, I wouldn’t go to the extent of best friends but she is definitely a good friend to me!
Q: Do you think Lana Del Rey has had an influence on your new album as some songs are said to be quite similar to hers?
A: Yeah I love to think that our music is similar as I adore her music!! Well I try to make my music unique and make it important to myself but yeah I’ll admit she did have quite an impact especially on my album there is a song called ‘Fuse friends’ which has a very similar tune as ‘Born to die’.
Q: Little rumor going around that you are going on tour after summer, is this true?
A: Yeah possibly, it’s not all gone through yet but I plan to, I want to head all around the country and Ireland. My tour list should be up on my website before the end of the month if it all goes through so any information will all be on there to find. However I would also like to do a couple of my songs at one of the major music festivals during the summer as it might get me some extra fans! Ha-ha

Well thank you Abby for coming in and telling us a little bit of background about your return and new album. We wish you all the best here at ‘Pulp’ for the future and hope your album goes well!

TEST SHOTS.

These are my test shots that I took for my magazine and the angles I am
thinking of possibly using. However there are some that haven't turned
out as I had wanted. This is because although the artist and the way she
is looking and positioned is good, I wanted more of a close up shot as
I think from looking at my photos now I want more of a focus on the
face and up close rather than a mid shot which is what I have done
here mostly.

ARTIST PROFILE.

My artist 'Abby LeMay' is 23 years old and is a british singer/song writer. Abby's influences are Kurt Cobain, Elvis Presley and Beach Boys.  She was signed with Stranger records in December 2009, to release her debut single 'Electribody' which hit number 6 in the chart. While being interviewed by Lisa Cram of the Observer, Abby revealed "I just put that song online a couple of months ago because it was my favourite that i'd written. I didn't mean for it to be a single but people have really responded to it." This set the fans going and urging for her latest album 'Power on me' to be released.

She was record of the week for Zane Lowe and Nik Grimshaw. Abby has in the past hung out with Alexa Chung in LA and recorded a variety of duets with artists such as Florence Welsch, Marina and Eliza Doolittle. She is due to tour O2 arenas in the autumn and has been signed up for performing in the NME radar tour.

She has recently returned from touring relentlessly following the success of her debut album. Abby had been to university in London studying music and recording which is what lead her onto doing her first song recordings within her apartment.

MAGAZINE NAMES.

I was thinking about what i could call my magazine and brainstormed a few ideas. I would like the name of my magazine to  represent the type of artists that are going to be featured within the magazine. Some artists such as Birdy and Lana Del Rey have a unique voice and some artists such as Florence and the Machine and Eliza Doolittle have a rare styled toned within their voices. So as my magazine are going to feature artists that have a 'RARE', 'UNIQUE' or 'RANDOM' voice i think these words would be quite powerful to use as my title. Other ideas that i had was PULP, WHISPER and FADE. The name i chose in the end was 'PULP' i think this is will go along with the whole idea of unique and randomness of the artists and I think the word PULP 'rolls' of the tounge well.

COLOUR PALLET.

These a few idea of the types of colours I would like to use in my magazine because they are simple neutral colours however arn't boring . I didn't want to chose bright and vibrant colours as this wouldn't represent the genre of the music my magazine is aimed at. Also I didn't want the magazine colours to over  power my artist so by using these neutral colours the audience will naturally find my artist more eye catching as well as the text. I would like to use neutral colours such as a pale background and dark text not only because the colours will contrast which will make it clear and to stand out.

FONTS - PULP.

Here are some of the fonts that I would like to use as my masthead. I like how they are all a quite bold and clear. I have chosen these because I think it will go with the neutral colour scheme that i have. These will help contribute towards the main attention being on the close up image of my model. Evevn though they are quite simple I think they look very proffesional which is what makes people buy magazines. Making my masthead look this simple also ties in with girls being the main audience and girls sterotypically neat and tidy therefore the font would match upto that stereotype.

Nme Target Audience

AUDIENCE PROFILES.

It'd be useful for me to understand what my auidence are like and what they expect to do this i asked 2 of my friends questions and looked into what their lifestyle is like.

I firstly spoke to my friend Polly Seymour she is 16 and studies Biology, P.E, Food and Health + Social care at Lutterworth College. Polly likes to listen to artists such as Arctic Monkeys, Katy B, Foals, Friendly Fires, Birdy, Bombay Bicycle Club but she also listens to Beyonce and Rihanna. "The music type that I like is a bit of everything. The mood I'm in can effect my decision in what I listen to however there is some music out there that I just not like such as heavy metal bands and blassical as I find these boring." Her favourite shops are Topshop, Urban Outfitters, H&M and Wardrobe so you can see that she is quite trendy and fashionable. This is good as my magazine will attract people that are querky with their fashion and music. In her spare time she socialises with friends and works at Waitrose. When asking what magazines she normally would pick up she said  magazines such as Glamour, Company and ELLE but with these style of magazines such bright bold colours however mine will not be and have more netural tones.

The second person I asked was my older sister Abby as I wanted to ask someone who is older and is doing something different to see what her thoughts were; Abby is 21 years old and has a job in London doing event organising for celebrities such as Olly murs and Shayne Ward. She listens to artists such as Arcade Fire, Beyonce, Rihanna, Jamie Woon, Florence & The Machine. She tends to shop at Urban Outfitters, Topshop, Zara and Office. Abby's favourite magazines are VOGUE, ELLE and Gossip magazines. In her spare time she goes out and socialises with her friends at night and weekends. Both my friend and sister has very similar likes and go nicely together.
